Training Experience

Background to Training Experience

The foundations of my adult education work are grounded in the design and delivery of parent education workshops during my time in Playcentre. I designed and delivered workshops using interactive and experiential teaching styles on topics such as play, child development, personal growth, leadership and positive discipline. I was a ‘Commentor’ for many years, providing constructive feedback on written assignments. As a community social worker I also facilitated staff training, life skills and parenting programmes, and personal growth groups for women.

As co-ordinator of SAFVPN, I designed and delivered a range of Family Violence Awareness programmes in south Auckland.
I have been a casual Lecturer at Manukau Institute of technology for some years, delivering a Level 4 & 5 Certificate in Working with Domestic Violence.
I have also continued to provide a variety of Professional Development Seminars for social service agencies across south Auckland.
My academic qualifications for this work are primarily based on the Psychology, Human Development and Adult Learning & Development  papers of my undergraduate degree, the NZ Playcentre Leadership Certificate, and the Learning and Teaching Styles component of the Supervision Diploma. As part of my Masters programme I designed , delivered and evaluated training for paraprofessional staff in the use of the Task Centred Model of Practice. A recent qualification is the certification as a Circle of Courage trainer.
As a social worker I believe in the sharing of knowledge for the enhancement of practice, and for the benefit of our clients and communities. I am interested in the linking of theory to practice in a real and usable way that taps into practice wisdom and expands our awareness, analysis and competence.
As a trainer I seek to pay attention to the holistic needs of the learner, and to establishing interactive and experiential learning experiences for adult learners so that they can build on their own rich reservoirs of knowledge and skills in a process of reflection and application that will assit them to incoprorate new concepts into existing frameworks.
